Existing Situation:

  • The present Commercial Business District of the poblacion occupies 2.5 has., in wet market, 0.5 ha. in textile and some 1.5 has. along Quezon Blvd., Pamaran Street, D. Flores St. and Rizal Ave. The commercial establishment of the city government is composed of 200 stalls where 80 for dry goods are permanent and the rest are temporary, including the 120 fish stalls. Last May 29, 1988, fire razed this government establishment in the center of the poblacion. Now it is being relocated to a new site at the oval, formerly a place designed for a sports complex. The previous site has been used as a commercial establishment for textiles only.

  • The present total number of commercial establishment in Lamitan, including copra dealers and similar activities, reaches 1,200. Last December 25, 2006, the fire razed some Government establishment in the oval site and now the public market is being constructed.

  • In the industrial sector, small scale industries particularly cottage industries are on the rise. This, plus coffee mill, ice plant, storage plant and electric plant within the poblacion, contributes to the growth of the municipality. So far, there is only one banking institution in Lamitan, the United Coconut Planters Bank that assists entrepreneurs in their business. Since 30% of urban folks derive their livelihood from business, therefore, it is possible that the national government should assist financially the municipality to complete its market establishment.
